How the Tradition of Mailing Christmas Cards Started

Filed Under (General) by admin on 31-08-2009

The formality of mailing Christmas cards was started in 1843 with Sir Henry Cole of England.

Because he had too many co-workers to hand compose Christmas notes, Sir Henry Cole appointed artist John Calcott Horsley to produce a card onto which he had printed “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You”.Sir Henry had one thousand cards printed that year.  Presently, only twelve remain.  The practice of sending Christmas cards caught on and soon, became a Christmas tradition.

The most well-received Christmas cards in the late 19th and early 20th century were made by the Victorian children’s storyteller and artist Kate Greenaway.  Like the scrapbookers of today, her cards often featured many different types of papers, fabrics and fringe.  Some were even elaborate pop-ups featuring skaters and tiny mangers.

In the United States, Christmas cards were not  readily available until 1875 when a German immigrant, Louis Prang began printing them.  Prior to to that year, Americans imported Christmas cards from England.  In the 1890’s, Prang could not compete with cheaper cards imprinted abroad and went out of business.  Still, Prang is known as the patriarch of the American Christmas card.

Card publishers competed fiercely amongst themselves during WWI and drove many technical advancements in card production.

The invention of color lithography in the 1930s completely renovated the industry.

The 1950’s saw a major change in how greeting cards were created:  now, humor was an element.  ‘Staple cards’ as they are known, are still very popular today.

The 1990’s saw the introduction of the e-card, an electronic version of a greeting card sent via e-mail.

Today, there are many types of Christmas card available, including traditional and religious Christmas cards to funny Christmas cards.  In fact, the industry has evolved so much that there is a card for virtually any event, or “non-event.”  Still, Christmas remains the highest ranking of the card-selling holidays.

As a staple of the holidays, Christmas cards are sent to family, friends and business colleagues to express holiday wishes.  With people’s busy lives, it is often the only time they update family and friends on events that happened in their lives during the year.  They are always evolving; from e-cards to written letters chronicling the year, to picture postcards, the warm sentiment is always there: Merry Christmas!

Scrapbooking Ideas – Personalized Beach Souvenirs

Filed Under (General) by admin on 30-08-2009

As a scrapbook addict, there are times when scrapbooks are almost always on your minds and when time comes and you’re on a vacation, you just can’t help looking for things that would look good on your scrapbook. When you’re someone from a non-beach area or maybe someone with a love for beaches, being able to go vacationing in a beautiful beach only means one thing – a great time equals great memories and that includes being able to get souvenirs from the beach itself.

For your scrapbooking purposes, here are some scrapbooking ideas you can use to make your scrapbook interesting and full of memories.

Sand

Getting scrapbooking ideas from a beach is easy. One thing that will forever be a memory on a beach is the feel of the sand. You may be wondering how to get sand onto your scrapbook. Sand can be put into plastic and the plastic can be taped easily onto the page. Other very creative people though can actually sprinkle real sand onto a small thin pool of glue on the page. It may get messy, but it still enables the sand to be imprinted on your scrapbooks.

Glass Stones

Another pretty object you can add onto your scrapbooking ideas would be glass stones. Glass stones are pretty, colorful and are usually safe, because the water softens the edges. These stones would look very good at the edges of photos or for a more interesting finish, have the stones cut into smaller pieces and sprinkle them over on colored glue.

Try taking glass stones from the gorgeous beaches of Papua New Guinea or the white sands in the Bahamas as your scrapbooking supplies. Surely, visiting gorgeous beaches will be a memory that will last forever – especially if that beach visit was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Don’t just make your scrapbook about beaches – make it the beach!

Free scrapbooking ideas – Decorating your Photos

Filed Under (General) by admin on 29-08-2009

Photography has become such an important part of scrapbooking now because it is a big part of making a scrapbook. While some people prefer to make scrapbooks out of souvenirs, objects bound by their memories, others create scrapbooks especially for their photos. Decorating a photo can be harder than it looks. When it comes to beautifying a scrapbook, you have to make sure that viewers not only appreciate the decoration that comes with the scrapbook but also the pictures as well – they are the reason for the scrapbook anyway. The question is, how do you decorate your photos in your scrapbook? What are some ways to highlight the memories secluded in the pictures? Aside from the tips you’ll get from taking online classes, here are two scrapbooking tips you can use:

Scrapbooking tip #1: Use preferred decorative paper as a background for your photo. Be creative. Cut out squares of patterned paper; have them aligned in diamonds so that they show bits of themselves above each paper. On top of the last design, curl Japanese paper to outline the photo, before placing the photo neatly in the middle.

Scrapbooking tip #2: Simple outlining results in elegant beauty. For memories with enlarged photos, use this to capture the page. Outline with one or two embellishments, and have simple, light colored background – possibly patterned paper. To top it all off, add a quote onto the page and entitle with the name of the event using felt letters.

Once you get the hang of scrapbooking and being creative, ideas will just keep oozing out of your mind! Aside from photos, you can also use any type of souvenirs or memorable pieces from the event you’d like to scrapbook about. Scrapbooking is a really enjoyable activity that you can do together with your family and friends.
