The 24mm f1.4 is one of the newest Nikon FX lenses around, having only been released earlier this year. The only word for it is¦stunning. There have been various attempts at making fast wide angle lenses in the past, very few of which have been any good. The only one to mention maybe the predecessor to this lens, the Nikon 28mm f1.4 AF-D, which was able to shoot is incredibly dark conditions even at ISO 100, perfect for gigs or music photography. The light gathering properties of this lens are no less impressive. With the advent of super high ISO settings in modern digital cameras, it is possible to shoot handheld in only moonlit conditions with this lens, it has been proven!
As the lens is 24mm, not 50mm, it only shows ‘hand shake’ only half as much, meaning you can shoot one stop down and still get the same results. A 50mm equivalent would also have a DOF that is four times shallower, making the 24mm much easier to use and focus correctly. The new lenses released this year also feature a new, purely internal focusing system, making them much hardier to dirt, dust and little bits that like to get inside. The images it produces are better than anything currently on the market, but at a cost of nearly £2,000 it really is a top end, pro lens. At any aperture it produces distortion free, bright, sharp images. Whilst this lens is designed for FX, it will work on DX, but there is no point. If you shoot DX, get the drastically cheaper 35mm f1.8.
Verdict - an absolute stunner. If you can afford it and have an FX camera, this will do everything, and do it well, very well. Highly recommended, especially for very light sensitive work like live music or interior architectural photography.
